From the long flight to your first Madrid walk
Madrid from Australia & New Zealand: arrival and planning
Coming to Madrid from Australia or New Zealand? Start by organising the hours after arrival: airport transport, somewhere for your bags and a walk you can shorten. Then build your sightseeing days around neighbourhoods, food and the time you actually have. This guide focuses on those decisions rather than repeating a whole Spain itinerary.

Your first day in Madrid after travelling from Australia
Keep arrival day separate from your full sightseeing days. Start with your flight’s local arrival date and time, terminal, accommodation address and check-in instructions. Allow for passport control, luggage and the whole journey to the hotel. If a connection changes, update your accommodation and any transfer provider before trying to keep a timed sightseeing booking.
Arriving before hotel check-in: sort out the bags first
Ask your accommodation whether it can store luggage before your room is available and confirm collection hours. Early check-in is an arrangement to confirm, not something a morning flight guarantees. If you need separate storage, choose it around the place you will return to, check the address and opening hours, and include the full cost for your bags. Leave room access, food and a short walk as the first-day priorities.
Choose a first walk you can shorten
Choose one area near your accommodation rather than linking every landmark on arrival day. Around the Prado and the Literary Quarter, you can begin with streets and squares and keep museum admission for a separate visit. Near Retiro, choose a few park stops and a meal around Narváez if it fits your day. Neither suggestion requires completing the whole route. Check the available walking distance, park access and your return journey before setting off.
Two or three full Madrid days within a longer Spain trip
Count usable days rather than nights booked. With two full days, choose two Madrid areas and leave the day trip for another visit. With three full days, you can separate the Royal Palace area, Prado and the Literary Quarter, and Retiro with Narváez. This is an editorial planning suggestion, not a minimum stay. If you add Toledo or Segovia, give the excursion its own day and check the outward trip, connection to the historic centre and return service.
Local food without booking every meal into a tour
Pair food with the neighbourhood you are already exploring. Narváez fits a Retiro day; the Literary Quarter fits the Prado area; Ponzano can be a separate outing. Ask about kitchen hours, portion sizes and what is included before ordering. Start with a small order and add more if you want it. A tapa with a drink is not guaranteed, and you can enjoy tapas without alcohol. Confirm ingredients and cross-contact directly with restaurant staff if you have an allergy.
Euros on the bill, Australian dollars in your travel plan
Keep booked prices in euros and your Australian-dollar budget reference separate. Record the date of any exchange-rate estimate and check your payment provider’s terms before travelling; an estimate is not the final amount charged. The GidePass Madrid pass costs €4.99, not A$4.99. Budget separately for accommodation, airport journeys, meals, admissions and excursions. Tipping in Madrid is optional; our payment guide explains how to check the bill and ask about card tips.
An Australian summer holiday can be a Madrid winter trip
If you travel during December or January, plan for Madrid’s winter rather than packing for the season at home. Check the forecast for your actual dates, monument hours, holiday opening and any transport changes. Prepare an indoor alternative and a shorter outdoor walk when conditions call for it. Australian departure cities and Madrid do not share one fixed time difference throughout the year: check both local times on your dated flight itinerary.
Checks to make before leaving Australia
Read Smartraveller’s current Spain advice and the guidance for any transit country. Confirm entry requirements with the relevant authorities for the passport, purpose and dates of your trip. Check your airline and rail operator directly for disruption information before travelling. Save your accommodation address, booking confirmations and contact details outside the app. Prepare mobile data and charge your phone: GidePass maps, the assistant and new camera translations need internet. Adding the app to your home screen does not make those functions fully offline.
Travelling to Madrid from New Zealand
Use SafeTravel’s current Spain advice for your departure checks and the guidance for each transit country. Confirm entry requirements for your passport, dates and purpose with the relevant authorities. The Australian advice linked in this guide is not a substitute for New Zealand’s guidance. Check every local date and time on your itinerary and leave flexibility between arrival, the hotel and your first timed booking.
A New Zealand-dollar budget for a euro-priced trip
Keep your Madrid reservations in euros and your NZ-dollar budget reference separately. The €4.99 Madrid pass is not NZ$4.99; the final charge depends on your payment provider’s conversion and fees. Check your mobile plan’s roaming terms for Spain, arrange internet for maps and assisted features, and save accommodation and booking details outside the app. A December or January departure is a summer trip at home but a winter trip in Madrid: pack and plan using the forecast for your dates.
Keep your Madrid days together
The GidePass Madrid city pass combines eight GPS walking routes with English audio guides and travel tools, including menu explanations and shared expenses. Check the route previews before deciding. It costs €4.99 for seven days from activation, paid once with no subscription. Maps and assisted features need internet; meals, tickets and transport are paid separately.

Should I book a full tour for the day I land?
Only book a timed activity if it suits your actual arrival arrangements and cancellation terms. A short, flexible walk after leaving your bags is another option. Move sightseeing to the following day if that works better for you.
Can travellers from New Zealand use this guide?
Yes. Arrival, luggage, walking routes and excursion planning are shared. The New Zealand sections cover SafeTravel, NZ-dollar budgeting and departure preparation; the Australian sections remain labelled for Australian travellers.
Does GidePass cover my whole Spain or Europe trip?
The Madrid city pass covers the Madrid routes and tools described on its product page. It does not provide city routes for every stop on a Spain or Europe itinerary. The standalone GidePass Lens camera product has separate terms and coverage.
When should I activate the Madrid pass?
You can buy before travelling and activate it when you want your seven-day period to begin. It costs €4.99 as a one-time payment with no automatic renewal. Meals, transport, admission and external bookings are separate purchases.
