01

A tapa is not always a meal

Some Madrid bars serve a small bite with your drink, from a few olives to something more substantial. A complimentary tapa does not mean that everything you order afterwards is free. Check the menu and ask before ordering.

02

Tapa, media ración or ración

Think of these as serving styles, rather than exact sizes. A tapa is usually small, a ración is intended for sharing, and some places also offer a media ración, or half portion. Sizes vary between kitchens. The most useful question is simply: how many people will this serve?

An idea to ask for better

Except at first, more discoveries.

    Question

How big is it and how many is it for?

Choose little at first and try without haste.

Ask for something else if you still want.

03

Start with two dishes

Our suggestion: choose something you fancy and something you have not tried before. Share, leave a little room and decide later whether to order more. An impromptu meal might start with tortilla and croquetas, or patatas bravas and a vegetable dish.

04

Tapas are just as enjoyable without alcohol

You do not need a beer or vermouth to enjoy tapas. Order water, a soft drink or whatever you prefer. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions, ask about ingredients and preparation before ordering: a dish's name does not tell the whole story.

05

Then head out for a walk

Afterwards, choose a route that suits your time and energy. Explore ready-planned routes in GidePass and find your next stop. Enjoying the neighbourhood is part of the experience too.
