What to expect in MadridMeal times, local flavours and life on the streets.
Madrid is better understood when you know its rhythm. You don't need to imitate it: find your schedules, learn to ask and leave room to enjoy the city your way.
Five keys to your first visit. Open only what interests you; the schedules are indicative.

They are common references, not cooking times or rules. They change according to each person and each place. If you have dinner early, confirm when the kitchen opens.
The light changes your ride
Around the June solstice, the sun rises around 6:45 and sets around 21:50; around December, it rises around 8:35 and sets around 17:50. The date matters more than a fixed hour. On hot days, it leaves room to rest and consult the forecast before organizing a long walk.

Approximate astronomical calculation for Madrid centro. «Anochece» indicates the end of the civil twilight: after sunset there is still some light left. Buildings and time can change what you see.
Madrid on the table
The cooked Madrid, the calluses and the squid sandwich are references of the local cuisine. Tortilla, croquettes and potatoes are also part of many taverns. For a sweet pause you can find chocolate with churros. A lid is usually small; a serving is usually shared and some locals offer half a sharing portion. The size and inclusion of a lid with the drink depend on the tavern.
Life on the street
Terraces, taverns, squares and walks are places to meet. You can find lively streets until late and other quiet ones a few steps away; the atmosphere changes according to the neighbourhood, the day and the time. The table is the time spent talking after lunch. You do not need to extend it or participate in night plans to enjoy Madrid.
How to relate
Madrid brings together people of many origins: there is not a single Madrid character. For a first visit, a “hello”, “please” and “thank you” are a good way to start. A direct treatment or an animated conversation can be part of the atmosphere of a tavern, without saying what each person is like. If you doubt, ask naturally and respect the space and rhythm of others.
