Lunch is often later than you expect
Madrid's official food guide puts typical lunch times between 14:00 and 16:00, with dinner at around 21:00. These are local habits, rather than opening hours for every restaurant. There are exceptions in the centre, so check each venue.
An open bar may not be serving food
A tavern may be serving drinks before its full menu is available. Before settling in, ask whether the kitchen is open and what you can order. A quick question can save an unexpected wait.

Make time for an aperitif
If you fancy a break before lunch, keep it light. There is no need to turn your aperitif into a feast. A drink and a small bite may be enough if you have a table booked afterwards.
Plan around your booking
If you have a show or a timed visit booked, allow enough time after your meal. Factor in the walk, possible queues and finding the entrance. The distance on the map is only part of the journey.
Eat when it suits you
You do not have to eat at a particular time to enjoy local life. Plan around your appetite, your travel companions and your energy. Food Life helps you explore options for different times of day. Check the menu and kitchen opening times before you go.
